Licensed Music Therapist – Connecticut
(860) 949-2294
Mark Wickham is Infinity’s Lead Student Supervisor, supporting students and interns across our four student programs. Alongside this role, he provides music therapy services and lessons primarily in Hartford County. Mark is nationally board certified through the Certification Board for Music Therapists and is also certified in Regulative Music Therapy, an awareness-centered approach to group musiclistening. He holds a Master’s degree in music therapy from The University for the Arts (Berlin, Germany) and a Bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from the Purchase College Conservatory of Music (State University of New York).
With a clinical background in adult psychiatric healthcare stretching back to 2014, Mark has worked with a broad range of client groups including people with clinical depression, eating disorders, personality disorders, dementia, psychosis, and autism spectrum disorders as well as intellectual and developmental disabilities. He also has over fifteen years of experience as a music educator offering traditional and adaptive music lessons.
Mark is a songwriter whose primary instrument is the bass. He is particularly adept at the clinical use of guitar, voice, piano and percussion.
Some highlights of his work in the mental healthcare field include integrating music therapy into interdisciplinary community treatment teams supporting innovative outpatient psychosocial wellness and substance abuse recovery programs. In this capacity, he’s introduced group singing, group music listening, and group improvisation as psychodynamic models of music therapy to outpatient mental healthcare, supporting people in crisis facing the very real challenges of their everyday lives at home. These experiences contributed to a neuro-affirmative, person-centered, and resourceoriented approach that resonates with the mission of flexible support at Infinity.
In addition to English, Mark speaks German fluidly and is able to use French conversationally.
What brought Mark to music therapy?
“People began telling me that I ought to explore music therapy, and I listened! After concluding my bachelor’s degree in music performance, I began working as a performer, recording artist and music teacher in New York City where I was mentored by Benedikte Scheiby of the Institute for Analytical Music Therapy. The training analysis she provided me at her aptly named supervision and music therapy practice (‘Sound Health Studio’) became
foundational to my understanding of both music and healing. That life affirming perspective is what motivates me to share music with others in the context of healthcare to this day.”
