Kayla Capano is a music therapy intern at Infinity. She will be graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy with dual minors in Psychology and Business Administration from Southern Connecticut State University. Kayla holds an additional Bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music, dual majoring in Music Production and Composition for Film, TV, and Video Games.
During Kayla’s internship she will be working alongside Infinity’s clinical team, leading individual and group music therapy sessions in early childhood settings, older adult programs, group homes, and in-clinic. Kayla will be working toward a total of 1200 clinical training hours to be eligible to sit for her board certification exam through the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
Throughout her education, Kayla has gained valuable knowledge in leading and co-leading music therapy sessions. Her practicum sites include the Hospital for Special Care, where she worked in medical pediatrics as well as two Autism Spectrum Disorder units. This experience allowed her to work in a fast-paced environment, adapting to changes as needed.
Kayla also had practicum experiences with memory care, neurodegenerative disorders, in hospice and palliative care, as well as bereavement. Much of this work focused on pain management, family relationships, legacy writing, and the grieving process. Most recently, Kayla led music therapy sessions at Southbury Training School. She worked with older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Kayla also harnesses her passion for music in other ways, including being an event disc jockey, producing local artists, and crafting her own instrumental scores.
Kayla’s primary instruments are the clarinet and alto-saxophone. She is also proficient on guitar, piano, and voice.
What brought Kayla to music therapy?
“While studying at Berklee, I took an introduction to music therapy course as an elective. This was my first time learning what this work included. I couldn’t believe that there was a field that so beautifully intertwined my passion for music and my passion for helping others. I finished my last semester at Berklee, went on to pursue music therapy, and here I am!”
