Jona Shook, MA, MT-BC, is the founder and Director of Services at Infinity Music Therapy Services, a practice she established in 2010 with a vision to provide innovative, client-centered care that empowers both individuals and communities. A passionate advocate for neurodiversity and equity, Jona has dedicated her career to integrating music therapy into a variety of settings, serving children and adults with developmental disabilities, mental health needs, neurological disorders, and those with general wellness goals.

Jona’s journey in music therapy began at Charleston Southern University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy with a second major in Psychology in 2007. Her internship in Fulton County, Georgia, within the public school system, provided her with hands-on experience working with children ages 3-21 who were diagnosed with developmental disabilities and emotional/behavioral disorders. She has been Board Certified through the Certification Board for Music Therapists since 2007. Jona earned her Master Degree in Law with an emphasis in business in 2025 from Regent University; Jona was named Outstanding Graduate for the Law School.

Jona’s leadership is grounded in both clinical practice and a deep commitment to advocacy. As a parent of a child with multiple diagnoses, including Autism, she has navigated the challenges of early intervention and special education not just as a clinician, but as a parent as well. This experience has fueled her dedication to understanding and advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities, specifically through her knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). She has developed a national online course to help clinicians and families understand how music therapy can be integrated into Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) under both state and federal law.

Jona is also a trained perinatal music therapist, specializing in Music Therapy Assisted Childbirth, Music for Labor Consultation Services, and Creative Arts Birth Education. She customizes playlists for pain management during labor, supports comfort measures during delivery, and helps families forge meaningful connections through music, including creating personalized womb songs and lullabies.

As Infinity’s Internship Director, Jona has mentored students across four distinct internship programs. Her ability to inspire and guide the next generation of music therapists has contributed to the development of a strong, passionate, and diverse team. Jona’s leadership extends beyond clinical work into the realm of business coaching, where she has helped numerous clinicians build successful private practices. She has shared her insights at local and national conferences, and her entrepreneurial spirit earned her recognition in 2022 when she was honored as a Rising Woman by the Connecticut Women’s Business Development Center. Jona was subsequently nominated as Woman Business Owner of the Year for the Small Business Administration in 2025.

Throughout her career, Jona has also worked in various direct support roles for individuals with developmental disabilities. Her experience includes serving as a live-in house manager at a Department of Developmental Services (DDS)-funded group home and as a clinician providing music therapy services through DDS group homes and day programs. Jona’s long-standing collaboration with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) since childhood, coupled with her extensive experience in the field, has given her a thorough understanding of both the clinical and systemic challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

Jona’s clinical approach is both creative and personalized, utilizing a wide array of instruments—including guitar, ukulele, piano, voice, flute, and drums—to design interventions based on the strengths, needs, and musical preferences of each client. Her commitment to thinking outside the box and adapting interventions to fit the unique needs of her clients has made her a sought-after expert in the field.

Her work is a testament to the profound impact that music can have on the lives of individuals, families, and communities, and she continues to inspire those around her to break down barriers, advocate for equity, and embrace the healing power of music.

What brought Jona to Music Therapy?

“When I was about eight years old I start learning how to play the flute. I volunteered at a nursing home at that time and I started bringing my flute with me. One day, while I was playing, one of my residents began to sing. I had never even heard her talk! I decided then that I would help people with music. I began volunteering with local agencies serving individuals with disabilities. I became a peer mentor. I spent my summers working with at risk children and adults with mental health disorders. It wasn’t until high school that I learned about music therapy and I have never looked back. Music therapy just made sense; music has been my way to cope with pain and journey through life. I have watched children learn to talk with music, older adults rehabilitate their gait and I have watched clients enjoy their last days of life in song. There is nothing like music therapy. It is amazing to see something so magical have such a foundation in science. I have great joy each time my clients make one small step. Music fulfills my life.

What has kept me in the field is watching the profound effect music has. I have a son with Autism. It was through music he finally crawled. It was through music that he said his first words. It is through music that he is learning how to express himself in times of frustration. I am passionate about music therapy because it has drastically changed the path that my son’s development was on. I have watched the same happen for countless others as well.”
