Alianna is a Staff Music Therapist at Infinity. They started their educational journey at Anna Maria College (AMC) in Paxton, MA and transferred to Westfield State University (WSU) located in Westfield, MA. They graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy degree, and a minor in Psychology. Alianna primarily provides services in New Haven County.
During their educational journey, Alianna worked in telehealth and in-person settings serving older adults, young adults with intellectual disabilities, children on hospice and palliatative care, and more. They completed their internship at Berkshire Hills Music Academy (BHMA) located in South Hadley, MA. They led and co-led individual and group music therapy sessions, music lessons, adaptive music lessons, and assisted in performances and gigs for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Overall, their time at BHMA gave them further insight on what it means to advocate for their clients and their families and approaching their clients through a holistic and empathetic lens.
Outside of their clinical work, Alianna was the Vice President of their Music Therapy Club at Westfield State University. They also served on the NER-AMTAS (New England Region of the American Music Therapy Association Students) board for 3 years as the Secretary and Parliamentarian. Through both experiences, Alianna helped aid music therapy students in hosting events on campus such as club fairs and mental health awareness events, as well as helping with the organization of events related to NER-AMTAS such as Spring Event and conferences. During their time on the board, they were also awarded a Student Scholarship from the Music Therapy Association as well as the Last Mile Scholarship from Westfield State University. This entire experience encouraged Alianna to continue being involved in the music therapy community and value how music therapy can and does make a difference in people’s lives.
All throughout their life, Alianna has been involved in both chorus and band where they played euphonium. They were even in the A Cappella Club at their high school and a brass quartet where they won gold at the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association (MICCA) competition! They are proficient on guitar, piano, percussion, and vocals. Fun fact: Alianna is a classically trained coloratura soprano who loves to hit whistle notes (they’re pretty good at bird impressions as a result). Alianna enjoys singing a variety of genres such as classical, jazz, and R&B, as well as improvisational music making and songwriting. Although they have yet to release their own music, you can find them doing background vocals on a lot of their friend’s songs. One day, their dream of putting out their own music will come true!
What brought Alianna to music therapy?
“I didn’t learn about music therapy until my senior year of high school the week before application deadlines (it was a very close call). Two things I knew for certain was that I always felt connected to music and I always wanted to help people. Once I realized there was a world that existed in which I could do both, everything changed. When I got to college, I thought I was in over my head, but every fiber of my being told me that I was right where I needed to be. I understood that there was so much to learn and that excited me even if it did scare me first. It’s honestly what motivated me to keep pushing, realizing how broad this field is and how many clients I could work with- the possibilities. When it came time to finally work with clients, I finally grasped the feeling of togetherness that music therapy is a vessel for. Creating music with others, helping client’s meet goals, clients hitting major milestones that I was able to witness has been incredible. I saw firsthand how music provides feelings of catharsis and unfiltered joy where clients can simply exist in the music. I can’t wait to continue to provide experiences like this throughout my career.”
